Do you dream of living in Portugal?

Do you dream of living in a country where the surroundings and landscapes are breath-taking, somewhere that offers cultural heritage, golden sandy beaches, spectacular mountains, where there is a combination of small tradition villages and vibrant, cosmopolitan cities? Where you can indulge in a variety of water sports, play some of the best golf courses, or just get out into the countryside to sample the local cuisine and some of the finest wines ever produced.

The long, hot summers and warm winters are certainly one of Portugal’s greatest appeals. As always, when looking at moving abroad it’s always best to learn about the country’s history and culture before moving. Prepare yourself with the necessary knowledge about the country to help you adjust to your new environment.

If you plan to stay in Portugal for more than 3 months, you must apply for a registration certificate from the Town Hall in your area of residence. This has to be done within 4 months of arrival in Portugal. The certificate will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue, for a permanent residence you need to apply to the Immigration authorities.

The cost of living in Portugal is cheaper than the UK in areas such as food, alcohol, eating out etc. Something else to consider is furniture, as is quite expensive in Portugal, so it is worth considering shipping from the UK when you move. The healthcare system in Portugal is similar to the NHS in the UK, although not all visits to doctors or hospitals will be free of charge. An S1 (EHIC) card must be obtained from the UK (for a small fee) and submitted to the Portuguese services

Once you have found your ideal home, be careful to check out the area at different times of the day and night for noise and traffic. Also think about that fact that you would be actually living there, not just on holiday! Some of the areas are lively and entertaining in the summer months, but are very quiet and virtually close up for the winter. It can get very hot in the summer, so living nearer to the coast offers a bit more in the way of breeze. If you want the more remote, rural countryside beware that language difference could be an issue.
